Using Library Resources

The Central Community College Library Resource Center includes our website and three campus library locations (Columbus, NE, Grand Island, NE and Hastings, NE).

The "Using Library Resources" guide will help students learn more about library resources, research practices, databases, and information literacy. Select one of the topics on the side bar to access additional information.

Information literacy is a vital part of student success and forms the basis of lifelong learning.  The Library Resource Center offers  "Information Literacy Skill Builders" to help students perform effective research. These practice modules cover key elements of information literacy like:

  • Defining a research topic and developing a research question
  • Developing keywords to use with research
  • Identifying types of information sources
  • Using research strategies to find material
  • Refining research results
  • Evaluating sources
  • Using sources ethically

Need additional library, research, or resource assistance?

The library staff is happy to answer questions or provide a one-on-one session with a student to help them better understand the resources available in the library. We can help students develop better research strategies and help them incorporate different kinds of materials into their research projects. We also field reference requests. Library staff can reached via chat (Ask a Librarian), through phone or email (Contact Info), or in-person at any library.

Librarians (aka Resource Center Supervisors or Directors) have professional expertise in information literacy, resources, research navigation, searching, and other library services, etc. To reach the diverse information needs of the Central Community College population, all campus libraries offer resource orientations or library tours to classes or groups upon request. Please use our "Contact Info" to schedule a session.

A library orientation session introduces students to the resources available in the library. We can tailor the session to meet particular class objectives. Students will learn the basics regarding library services and resources, including library web site navigation; finding a book or other print resources in the CCC libraries, and the basics of constructing an efficient search strategy. In addition, students will learn the difference between popular magazines and scholarly journals; all the tools involved in finding just the right article in the databases; and the steps involved in evaluating a web site.
